Tapian Bale Wins Bate’s Third Bendigo Cup

Slick sprinter Taipan Bale in the Group 2 MTD Bendigo Cup (430m) on Easter Sunday.

Trained by Lara living legend , Taipan Bale deservedly broke through for Group race glory – in his eighth black type final, including runner-up to in last year's Bendigo Cup.

It was Bate's third success in the event having also saluted with Lansley Bale (1998) and Dragway
Flex (2006).

“He's just a terrific dog… A no-fuss animal who is a pleasure to train,” Bate said.

“He's very popular with the public, and it was great to see him win a race of this status. I'll now
head to the Cup series with him.” (Taipan Bale finished third to El Galo in last year's Warrnambool Cup.)

Taipan Bale ($2.50F) snared a $26,000 first prize defeating Our Wilbur ($2.90) and Parracryl ($6.50)
in a flying 23.73sec – around two lengths off the 23.61sec held by Slater.

It was his 32nd win (with 15 seconds and seven thirds) from 67 starts. His stakes spiralled to
$146,955.

After the placings the field finished in the following order 4th ($8.00), 5th Pure Love ($17.50), 6th Young Ravello ($36.00) 7th Spence‟s Shadow ($15.10) and Retro Bale ($53.20).

Meanwhile, Ned's Pedro took out a $10,000 winner's cheque in the Rocky Ridge Farm Gold
Rush Maiden (430m).

Prepared by champion Devon Meadows mentor , Ned's Pedro ($1.40F) clocked
23.97sec. A half-share in Ned's Pedro recently went for $14,500 at an auction to raise funds for the Kinglake football and netball teams.

McDonald will now set Ned's Pedro for the series, a race he has won on three
occasions.

The cup and maiden were the highlights of the Bendigo Gold Rush Carnival (April 2-12) – featuring seven race meetings over 11 days.

Listed below is the Bendigo Cup honour roll. The club first raced at the Eaglehawk circuit just out of Bendigo in the 50's. The Cup was run over 400 yards, but for a few years in the 70‟s saw it go over the 528 metres. When the club moved to Lords Raceway in 1988 the race was conducted over the current sprint distance of 430 metres ever year except 2001 when it was run over the middle distance of 545 metres. A number of top horse-shoe dogs have won the cup over the many years it has been the club‟s flag ship event.
