Typhoon Sammy reigns supreme in Traralgon Cup final

Typhoon Sammy in action

It was a winning quinella for sire Aston Dee Bee in Australia Day night's final, after took out the race on the newly opened J-curve circuit over the 395m.

Stepping from box seven, the Jason Thompson-trained chaser jumped smartly and managed to stick with his inside rivals around the turn, before taking the lead and holding off a late challenge from Paua Of Janie and Hill Top Jonah in third in a time of 21.66.

After a frantic morning which involved a system error in the scratching of Typhoon Sammy, the handler – Thompson's son – was clearly elated by the performance, stating on social media that it is a day he won't forget.

It was only fitting Sammy finally tasted some well-deserved success after missing out on a place in last years final due to a dead heat in the first heat and the rule of the slowest heat winner missing out being applied.

The 34kg star is building a handy career record with last night's victory being the 22nd of his career from start 33 and his prizemoney total now at $75,435.
