Vegemania’s Miraculous Race Track Return
Not many people would recognise the name Vegemania, however after you learn of his remarkable return to the race track, I'm confident there will be an array of participants eager to view his next race start.
Hunter Valley trainer Rod Teasdale performance trialled Vegemania at The Gardens over 400 metres back in April, clocking a time of 23.23. After finishing fifth in his first race start at the track two weeks later, Teasdale never expected the horrific accident that happened one Tuesday morning.
“He was just running around our yard and then fell over and broke his neck.”
“Luckily it wasn't near the spinal cord, but rather the area near the outside of the neck.”
“The vets couldn't operate so all we could do was try and keep his head still, which was very hard.”
“It was horrible watching him try and get up and down off his bed.”
After twelve long and strenuous weeks of recovery and rehabilitation, Teasdale made the decision to put Vegemania back in work and was pleasantly surprised with his progress.
“He was trialling pretty well and I thought it would be worth having another go with him, since the injury had healed.”
Five months after making his debut, the son of Vee Man Vane and Blue Sky Libby returned to Gosford at the end of September, finishing second over the 400m. Two and a half months later, Vegemania finally cracked his maiden win at Maitland this past Wednesday, clocking 23.02 over 400m. Teasdale was elated after the race, adamant all the months of hard work put in returning his beloved chaser to the race track was worth it.
“I was actually relieved more than anything. He's such a beautiful big dog and the win was worth every minute of all the hard work.”
“He was due to go to another trainer on 27th of this month, so it was great to win with him and my wife and I decided to take the offer of shifting him to a country trainer. I have no doubt he will do well there.”
Greyhounds have an amazing resilience to recover from horrific injuries and illnesses and make a successful return to the race track. Anthony Azzopardi's Group winning chaser My Boy Snoop returned from a twisted bowel injury last week at Wentworth Park and ran home extremely week last night finishing third, I'm sure delighting owner Terry Kingcott.

Vegemania has a great home to return to when he is finished racing… back to his owner and breeder who still has his mum plus 7 other retired greyhounds as pets. Great story of a gutsy dog that didn’t want to stop racing!
