Yankee’s Ethics primed for his assault on Peter Mosman Classic

Greyhound racing

DESPITE being an outsider, maintains his promising young greyhound Yankee's Ethics has the talent to match it with his rivals in Saturday's Peter Mosman Classic (520m) at .

Rated a $21 chance with Bet365, Yankee's Ethics won his heat of the $75,000 series in 30.00 before following up that effort with a slick second behind Mister Twister in his semi-final, clocking 29.91 past the post.

A winner of five from 11 with three minor placings, Smith is under no illusion that Yankee's Ethics is facing a tough task against flying machine sprinters (box four), Mister Twister (box five), Up Hill Jill (box six) and (box eight).

However, the Elderslie conditioner remains confident in his greyhound's ability.

“The best is still to come from him I am sure,” Smith told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“He can go faster than what he has showed us so far – he has trialled there in quick time on his own.

“He can run fast enough to match it with most of them, but they have more early pace than him and he is drawn poorly – an inside draw would have helped him a lot – but he is still in there with a chance.”

Smith says the biggest fault with the son of and Slasher's Ethics is his lack of early pace.

“His box manners leave a little bit to be desired and I have done a bit of work with him but I think that's just him.

“He still has speed and plenty of ability, hopefully he just puts it together with a bit of maturity.”

While he is facing a big challenge, Smith says he expects the 30-kilogram powerhouse to strip fitter for his most recent run.

“He had two feet in bandages [after his heat win] so we were lucky to get him to the semi-final,”he said.

“I think he will be better for the run – he has been back in work this week and he is jumping out of his skin.

“He is 100 per cent fit – he got checked for the last time [on Thursday] and he is spot on so there will be no excuses on Saturday night.”

Smith says he is hoping Yankee's Ethics can run a bold race on Saturday night, but says it is a big buzz just to be lining up in one of the most prestigious events on the NSW greyhound racing calendar.

“It is exciting and daunting to be racing all the big trainers – but hopefully this bloke can get up there and run a drum,” he said.

“If I can run a place I would be wrapt, but just to be there is great because I have never made a 1 final.

“The plan when I have been going to sleep and dreaming about it is for him to follow the dogs with pace across from the outside.

“If he is close enough to them around the first turn I think they'll be looking over their shoulders for him.”

The Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic is race eight at Wentworth Park on Saturday night and is set to jump at 9.57pm.
