Second track record! Barefoot Zulu dominates Ipswich 520m record

Barefoot Zulu Ipswich 520m Track Record
Barefoot Zulu breaks the 520m Ipswich track record for trainer John Thompson. Race Time: 29.81

Barefoot Zulu made history at Ipswich on Tuesday, scorching the 520m circuit in a breathtaking 29.81 seconds to break the long-standing track record.

The previous record of 29.83, set by Blue Hornet in February 2023, was eclipsed as Barefoot Zulu produced a masterclass in speed and power, leading throughout to score by an emphatic 11.75 lengths over Zipping Slash, with kennelmate Barefoot Gypsy finishing third.

Trained by John Thompson and owned by Simone Kellermeyer, the son of Sennachie – Kooringa Maizie has now registered his second track record, having set the Grafton 450m record of 24.98 in August last year.

Barefoot Zulu exploded from Box 4, clocking a slick 5.24 first sectional, and was never in danger as he extended his margin with each stride as the heavy $1.22 favourite with the top greyhound bookmakers.

The white and black flyer remains undefeated in two Ipswich appearances and has now secured six wins from 15 career starts, amassing $35,340 in prize money.

Previously the Grafton Maiden Classic winner, he had been racing against elite company at Warragul and Albion Park but found the drop back to graded racing much to his liking.

His blistering early speed and sustained acceleration have turned him into a genuine star on the rise.

With the Ipswich track set to close following the opening of The Q, Barefoot Zulu could well go down as the fastest dog to ever run the 520m distance at the venue.

It is a legacy that adds another chapter to his already impressive resume.

Looking ahead, Barefoot Zulu now sits at $16 for the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park, a race that could solidify his standing among the country’s top sprinters.
