The curtain comes down tonight of the 2009 Golden Easter Egg Carnical but not before Wentworth Park will host one of the biggest crowds ever seen at the Glebe circuit, with a sensational night of greyhound racing, crowned by the best greyhound race seen for more than a decade, the 2009 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg.
The tantalising clash between Miss Elly Mint and El Galo has been given greater importance as Seona Hood and Jason Thompson have annouced their intention to retire El Galo to stud after tonight’s race, should he win the $150,000 to the winner race. That talk has intensified as they have given indications that not onyl will he go to stud, but his stud service price will be an amazing $3,300 per serve. That price is the equal of his own sire, Where’s Pedro who is already proven as sire; and will be a record for a debut sire.
Of course El Galo’s sire price is not the only record on the line tonight. Should he win El Galo will create a new all time stakes record for a greyhound of $622,590, shooting past Rapid Journey’s current record of $530,995. Miss Elly Mint is aiming to add to her stellar record and claim win number 22 from her last 23 starts, Joanne Monelli is attempting for WA’s first win in Australia’s premier event, and both Joanne Monelli and Spiral Glory are trying to finish better than third to be the best performed progeny from an import sire in the Golden Easter Egg’s 19 year history.
But the Easter Egg is more than capably supported by the Group 2 The Ambrosoli and the Group 3 Fields Easter Chase for the stayers, as well as the yougsters on display in the Group 3 Magic Maiden with the Dave Righetti trained and Ray Hadley owned Locatelli, looking a potential top liner in the making.
2009 Golden Easterr Egg Carnival Final Night Tips
AFGBOTA Stake – Race 1 – 520m – 7:27 PM
Difficult race to start the night with the 2 main chances boxed in the inside 2 boxes but both slow early. Arthur Ritis is clearly very talented but will get back along way early and then try to run on. Malak Bale isn’t quite as slwo as Arthur Ritis but will get covered early and does look a handy dog on the way up. Really depends who finds the lead early here tonight as to how this race plays, Queensland Futurity winner Millenium was very dissapointing here 2 weeks ago in the Easter Egg Heats and Hendrix is better than recent form suggests. Fancy Muskerry Belle will lead early and try and lead but Malak Bale will be close enough to hold her out. That will be the death knell for those drawn wider and Arthur Ritis will get the gun trail.
Selections : 1st Malak Bale – 2nd Arthur Ritis – 3rd Muskerry Belle
Burson Automative Stake – Race 2 – 520m – 7:45 PM
Dana Tiger gave them hell here last week in the Easter Egg Semi’s and hit the fron before getting collared and fading in the run. Expect he’ll be able lead again from box 4 tonight but can’t wuite run the time to win. Excellerator is looking to steal some northern money and has a good recent 29.79 Sandown win to his credit 2 starts back and is a strong conveyance. Fom the rails alley he should get the right run to run over the top of Dana Tiger and Tiggerlong Patch has been running well lately without winning and should be able make ground tonight.
Selections : 1st Excellerator – 2nd Dana Tiger – 3rd Tiggerlong Patch
Repco Auto Parts Stake – Race 3 – 520m – 8:07 PM
Another tough race with some old hard heads up against a few average young ones. Probably a good race for an upset, but we have to go with one of the younger greyhounds here, Midnight Flare who is probably going to waste the inside box, but is building a good record and ran home well here Monday to beat No Dingo from back in 4th place early. Hopefully gets a good enough run to make a challenge at the leaders at some point. Early leader probably comes from Mega Tadmore, Madison Tokaam and possibly Movealong Titan. Of those only Mega Tadmore is strong enough to lead all the way, but fancy it is the least likely of the three to lead. Veteran Orphan Point will runs his usual honest race.
Selections : 1st Midnight Flare – 2nd Movealong Titan – 3rd Orphan Point
Group 3 Multiquip Magic Maiden Final – Race 4 – 520m – 8:27 PM
Astute trainer Dave Righetti took the wrapper off Locatelli (History Lesson ~ Winsome Bluebird) here on Monday night in the semi’s of this race and he flew out of box 4 and made evry post a winner, bolting in by 7 lengths and breaking the 30 second barrier, running 29.98. The week prior he had come from behind in the heats to win in 30.33. If he jumps again tonight from box 5 he just wins. Murray Cod (Closing Argument ~ Miss Blue Blood) is another in good hands with Mark Bell and did enough to beat Jedd Lion in 30.39 and should get a good run from box 3, while Jedd Lion (Bombastic Shiraz ~ Magic Grove) is strong enough, and classy enough, to toil away through the field to get in to the placings.
Selections : 1st Locatelli – 2nd Murray Cod – 3rd Jedd Lion
Group 2 De Bertoli Wines The Ambrosoli – Race 5 – 520m – 8:50 PM
Group 2 race for those that just missed in the Golden Easter Egg Semi’s. Last weel’s 3rd and 4th placegetters get another crack at a group race and the thick end of some good prizemoney. Both True Kihael and Birthday Boy have been very impressive at the past start here without winning. Fancy True Kihael get his chance tonight at only his 14 race start. A young greyhound with a huge future and suspect he’ll lead all the way. Birthday Boy just hasn’t had the same turn of foot from the boxes since getting injured when the Ballarat boxes crushed his front foot. Has been showing all his old chase and speed at the softer Wentworth Park surface though and he’ll overcome any early touble to look the winner at some stage. Brislane looked good flying home last week from last early to get in to third. Look for a repeat performance tonight.
Selections : 1st True Kihael – 2nd Birthday Boy – 3rd Brislane
Group 3 Globe Memorial Easter Chase – Race 6 – 720m – 9:08 PM
Hand picked field linning up but without exciting youngsters and dual Richmond 717m Track Record holders, Forty Twenty and Laurie’s Legacy who would’ve made the race far more interesting. As it stands Gold Slammer has to lead to win on recenr runs as he is content to run behind at his past few. Others Quoted is the likely leader which means Gold Slammer can’t or won’t win. Lilley Criminal was very dissapointing in Perth, even getting run down once leading and doubt she will be a force. There is definitely 2 Shadow Boxers, one is a serious stayer the other a littel better than a non tba 5th grader. Impossible to know which one will turn up, but id Others Quoted leads, then I will suggest it will be the latter. Gunnadoo Magic is still trying but very much just going around, she was very consistent earlier in the year but looks as though she might have had enough for now. Genista Reign looked good winning her last start and may be the youngster on the rise, although prior to that run, we would never have rated him a mention in a race like this. Others Quoted leads and wins, trust Genista Reign will keep improving and Gunnadoo Magic runs her usual honest race.
Selections : 1st Others Quoted – 2nd Genista Reign – 3rd Gunnadoo Magic
Cadbury Stake FFA – Race 7 – 520m – 9:30 PM
Consolation prize race for Reg Kay and Size Can Matter after he wasted the inside box here last week against Joanne Monelli, but still don’t think he’ll be good enough to use it to advantage. Has drawn boxes 3,1,2,8,1 and 1 at recent runs so can’t blame his form on box draw luck. Only 6 left here after scratchings and no Eluthra unfirtunately, who would’ve blown them away, but speeed looks drawn outside with Special Kid and Sky Fly High. Special Kid began from box 6 last week and ran an amazing 29.80 to make it 8 starts for 4 wins and 2 2nd’s here. Looks as though the race will run very similarly tonight. Sky Fly High won well here on Monday and will get a nice cart over with Special Kid but won’t be able to catch Special Kid. Size Can Matter will have another hard luck story to tell and run 3rd.
Selections : 1st Special Kid – 2nd Sky Fly High – 3rd Size Can Matter
2009 Group 1 Golden Ester Egg – Race 8 – 520m – 10:10 PM
If you’re still awake by now – fair dinkum how hard would it have been to have it a little earlier so the kids could watch – you’re about to witness what will easily be the race of the year and the best greyhound race seen in the last decade. We have provided detailed form for this race, which has proved extremely popular so make sure you take advantage of all the stats avaible to you there. The box draw means Miss Elly Mint begins and holds the inside and El Galo has to race the whole trip on her outside. If El Galo wants to be called a champion, he’ll prove it tonight as it will take nothing less than a champion performance to race out side here all the way and still keep fighting to down her on the line. Miss Elly Mint for her part has been perfectly prepared by Robert Smith, and is improving at each run, which is how you win a big race like this, peak on the right day. Trust El Galo showed his best in the first week of the heats and can’t go any better than that, for that reason we think Miss Ell Mint can find enough from last week’s run to hold it all together down to the line. Dane Beatrice will be right on the heels and may be the problem greyhound as if she contacts any of the greyhounds in front of her, Joanne Monelli, who ran an amazing run home time last week and won’t be far behind Dana Beatrice will swoop. Neither Miss Ell Mint nor El Galo will want Joanne Monellis in clear running and within 2-3 lengths of them going down the back straight. Can make a case for each of the eight runners here tonight which is why this will go down as the best of the 20 Golden Easter Eggs ever run, and whomever takes the prize will have earnt it as there is no deadwood here at all. Check our detailed form guide to see why each runner could win. Forced to chose we have to see the race going to the inside boxes, but no result will surprise here.
Selections : 1st Miss Elly Mint – 2nd El Galo – 3rd Joanne Monelli
Associations Banker’s Cup – Race 9 – 520m – 10:40 PM
No Dingo is the key to the race here, he always alooks as though he’ll win but either doesn’t run on or gets run down. Fancy he’ll lead again from box 5, but it looks as though Salford Gypo will get the right run to be the one that benefits from No Dingo. Would’ve popped for Betsey Baretta but she was very dissapointing at Gosford Tuesday night from an inside draw and can’t have her at all tonight. Illusionist Flo looks best placed of the rest to get in to the placings.
Selections : 1st Salford Gypo – 2nd No Dingo – 3rd Illusionist Flo
Wesfil Australia Stake – Race 10 – 520m – 10:40 PM
Ordinary race to close the race out, but made more interesting by yougster Outta Danger gaining a run from box 4. Outta Danger has had 2 wins of his 6 start career at Richmond and has run a more than handy 30.71 at his last start leading all the way. Will have to either kick upside speedy but week Jane Reaction to win tonight, so will be a good test of his potetnial but is in good hands. Veteran professional placegetter Sailor Skye can do enough to finish 3rd.
Selections : 1st Outta Danger – 2nd Jane Reaction- 3rd Sailor Skye
