Excavation opens as favourite for Brisbane Cup Final for Thompson
Tony Brett and Jason Thompson continued their performance, in the Brisbane Cup heats on Thursday night as their dogs secured victories in five out of the eight qualifying heats.
Excavation, under Thompson’s training led the pack with a 29.47 heat win and is currently leading the odds at +150 with the top online bookmakers.
This two year old offspring of Fernando Bale has been a standout performer during the Queensland winter carnival claiming the Brisbane Cup Prelude over fellow contender Mepunga Smokey.
Tony Brett had a success with his Cup contenders as Zipping Megatron (29.68) and Lakeview Emily (29.93) both claimed heat victories.
The favourite of the series, Ballarat Cup winner Explicit also trained by Thompson triumphed in his heat with a time of 29.96 despite starting from box six.
This son of Bernardo is aiming for a second Group 1 victory and fourth group win overall in the Brisbane Cup final with Neds pricing him at +260 from box two.
Other qualifiers for the final include Good Odds Cobber from NSW (30.17) and Smooth Plane from Victoria (29.92).
The seventh spot went to Victorian powerhouse Mepunga Smokey (29.84) while Thompson’s Flying Zulu (29.97) completed the field.
Flying Zulu currently third in the betting odds at +400 will be starting from box one in the race and will be hoping to secure a Group 1 victory after finishing as runner up, to Stormy Day in last month’s Group 1 Harrison Dawson event.
The prestigious $1 million Brisbane Cup final is scheduled to take place along side the Group 1 Queensland Cup on Thursday night at Albion Park.
