Gonzo The Great Shows Plenty Of Dash

Bill Harrow & Octavia's 10-race meeting on Saturday was highlighted by the number of smart youngsters strutting their stuff in the Dawson Park Dash heats, with the -trained Gonzo The Great producing the best time of 23.16secs.

Three heats of the Dawson Park Dash were conducted. Heat one saw the Cliff Rushten trained Awesome Mate ($5) continue its current good form with a strong 23.31s victory.

Short-priced favourite Miss Maxwell at $1.60 tried valiantly to overhaul the leader but found the winner a tad too good on the day. Third money went to 's starter at $3.

Heat two went to Zini's Jet (Stately Bird x Zini, trained by Brian Baker) who scored a good time of 23.31s after a clean get away from box number four. The winner started at $2.50 while Ruby Invader ($4.40) and Leslie John ($6) filled the placings.

Heat three was all Gonzo The Great ($1.40 favourite) who streeted its rivals to score in the slippery time of 23.16s. Gonzo is owned by Dubbo club president Bryan Maxwell and trained by Denise Sparkes.

Other winners on the day were Deen ($3) for John Bowman in 18.68s and Assassin Journey at $1.70 favourite in 23.29s for Jan Steel.

Local race club director Charmaine Roberts started Saturday's meeting well when Miss Keely took out the opening event in 23.72 secs.

The minor placegetters were Amarosa and Yantarra Holly.

Saturday also another extra good win by the -trained Iddy Biddy Moo.

Iddy Biddy Moo kept up her impressive form with a smart win in the main 400m event of the afternoon. Beginning brilliantly from the pink, Iddy Biddy Moo led clearly running 9.18s for the first split and an overall effort of 23.22s.

Camomile Boy put in another honest performance to cover second money while Cotton Jenny ran on for third.

Race two saw the Peter Dutton-trained prove far too good for her rivals scoring in a brisk 18.25s. Create A Havoc ran on well for second while Iceburg filled the minor placing.

Exquisette Mimi has now won her past two starts and the time recorded on Saturday indicates she is well worth following in the weeks ahead.

Miss Skaife at $5 upset the favourites in the Mixed Grade Stakes over 516m when she led all the way in 30.67s.

The Rob Harrison-trained sprinter displayed good box speed to lead clearly from the three and then defied several attempts from ($2.50 ef) to run her down. Irinka Ludlee, the second $2.59 equal favourite, finished in third placing.

Molong trainer Bill Harrow continued his good trot at Dawson Park when ($3.50) took out the fourth and fifth grade 516m event.

Starting from the squeeze box, Octavia led clearly and had an advantage of 2-1/2 lengths over second placed Lisa Keeping ($2.50 fav) when the judge called a halt. Ann Marie Harrow's Bush Beauty at $3.50 finished third. Time for the race was 30.56s.
