GRNSW Showdown Comes Right Down To The Wire
Five greyhounds are still in the hunt for the ultimate prize in the Greyhound Racing NSW Country Challenge.
The series that has traversed the State over the past nine months comes to a conclusion within the next two weeks and some of the best greyhounds in NSW are still vying to pick up the $10,000 bonus for being the overall winner of the series.
The John Lawson trained Future Fund is in the box seat to take out the top prize following the heats of the penultimate round of the championship at Broken Hill on Saturday. Currently in equal first place on 32 points, the black dog scored a heat win in a quick time of 30.85 seconds over the 525 metre distance and will go into the final next Saturday with the chance to lock in a series win.
The only other greyhound listed in the top eight on the leaderboard that made the final at Broken Hill is Winona Gold. He finished fourth in a heat on Saturday and a win in the final will be enough to push him into equal third spot alongside Drive Up – who missed a place in the Broken Hill final and is a reserve for the final on Saturday.
Current equal leader Cashmere Queen did not compete at Broken Hill but is expected to line up in the Kempsey heats this coming Saturday. If she makes the final we could see the title once again decided from the final race of the year following last year's dramatic events where Token Mulwee managed to snatch the series from Montana Belle also at Kempsey.
The Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Country Challenge is conducted across 28 tracks statewide with each hosting a leg of the series. More than 200 greyhounds have competed in the series this year and those that make finals have accumulated points based on their finishing positions. The highest point scoring greyhound at the end of the Kempsey race on Saturday 27 June will be crowned GRNSW Country Challenge Champion and the connections take home a $10,000 bonus.
GRNSW has so far given away more than $430,000 in prize money over the three years of the series.
