Heartwarming Victory: Michelle Mallia-Magri impact on boys with disabilities

The greyhound racing community was filled with excitement on July 5 as an exhilarating maiden 450m race unfolded, culminating in the victory of an extraordinary greyhound named Matt Loch. What makes this victory even more special is that Matt Loch is named after two boys, Matthew Field and Lachlan Barsby, who both live with cerebral palsy.

-Magri, the trainer of Matt Loch, not only chose to name the greyhound after these two boys but also surprised everyone by offering them a 25% ownership share. This generous gesture not only establishes a symbolic connection between Matthew and Lachlan and Matt Loch but also allows them to be direct beneficiaries of his future victories and achievements.

Cerebral palsy, a condition affecting movement and balance, makes Michelle's decision even more touching. Her effort to include the boys in a sport she loves reflects her determination to bring positive change into their lives.

“Matty and Lachie are incredibly special individuals whom I've had the pleasure of knowing for years,” Michelle said. “Given the challenges they face, I saw this as an opportunity to give back and involve them in a sport that brings me immense joy.”

For Michelle, greyhound racing transcends mere financial gains; it is about creating meaningful experiences and opportunities for others. She firmly believes that everyone, regardless of circumstances, should have the chance to experience the thrill of this sport. Her enthusiasm and joy in sharing victories with Matthew and Lachlan showcase her unwavering commitment to making a difference in their lives.

Michelle's with Matthew began on the racetrack in their shared hometown of . Known fondly as ‘multi Matty,' he has become an integral part of the racing club. Matt Loch is not Matty's first shared ownership; previously, Michelle had given him a 25% stake in another successful greyhound named Matt's Hope, which had won over $130,000 in prize money.

“Matt's passion for greyhound racing is unparalleled. After every race, he calls me, filled with excitement, celebrating the success of every winning team, no matter the outcome for our dogs,” shared Michelle.

Eight-year-old Lachlan Barsby, despite his limited means of communication, managed to send Michelle a heartwarming photo of himself giving a thumbs-up gesture after Matt Loch's impressive victory on July 5.

“When I saw that photo, it truly moved me. If I can bring smiles to their faces week after week through greyhound racing, then it gives me a sense of purpose to train these dogs every morning and strive for their best performance,” said Michelle.

Michelle's dedication to making a positive impact in her community has earned her widespread admiration. Her generosity and inclusivity serve as an inspiration, highlighting the transformative power of sport and sportsmanship.
