The immediate racing future of Australian Cup winner Mepunga Tully will be determined following X-rays scheduled for Tuesday, with trainer Jeff Britton facing an anxious wait for the results.

Mepunga Tully was a shock late scratching from last Saturday night’s Group 1 Perth Cup Final at Cannington, where she had been the race favourite with the top online bookmakers.

Say hey to the social bet!

Britton noticed swelling around a hock just hours before the $200,000-to-the-winner final, forcing her withdrawal.

The injury concern arose despite an earlier routine check where the prolific chaser appeared to be in perfect condition.

Her absence reshaped the Perth Cup final, with Deadly Avenger and Morton, drawn alongside her, securing first and third place, respectively.

The late scratching also meant the feature event was contested with only seven runners, adding to Britton’s disappointment.

With Mepunga Tully’s participation in upcoming races hanging in the balance, the team now awaits the X-ray results to determine the severity of the issue.

The worst-case scenario could be a hairline fracture, while a minor ligament sprain would offer a more optimistic outlook.

Mepunga Tully was set to be confirmed as the representative for Total Container Solutions/Team Britton in The Sandgroper at Cannington on April 24.

However, her ability to take part will depend on the medical assessment. The team remains hopeful but will prioritise the greyhound’s well-being before making any commitments.

Adding to a frustrating evening for Britton, Groovebird was narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Galaxy (715m), edged out by Ethanol Water in the final strides. The near-miss compounded an already difficult night for the kennel.

While Mepunga Tully’s absence left a void in the Perth Cup final, the remaining contenders delivered a high-quality contest, with Deadly Avenger securing the title.

Meanwhile, all eyes now turn to the upcoming X-ray results, which will shape the next steps for one of Australia’s premier greyhounds.
