Lawrence Leonard Chases Mum’s Memorial Race

This Saturday’s running of the Lesley Ann Leonard Memorial Final at Dawson Park could be an emotional day for her son, Lawrence Leonard.

In what will be the 20th year the event has been held, Lawrence will have a chance to claim his first win in the race with second fastest qualifier Yantarra Sam set to be jumping from the boxes.

Yantarra Sam was impressive in the heats held at the Dubbo track on Saturday, bolting home in heat two of the 400m event in 23.39 seconds.

Only Little James ($1.80fav) from the strong Braddon kennels in Cowra registered a quicker time, running 18.17s on his way to winning the third heat by five lengths.

Yantarra Sam paid $5.00 for the heat win from the three box, winning by 3 1/4 lengths from Five Pens ($5.00) while the more fancied Little Kiss ($2.80) finished outside the final another 4 1/2 lengths back third.

The first heat saw Cool Quality ($4.00) first past the post from box four in a time of 23.66s.

Also trained by Pam Braddon, Cool Quality held 1 3/4 lengths over Lickin Steel ($3.00) and Blackrain Bonnie (9.00).

The final heat of the day saw Amethyste ($5.50) also win from the four box, with the third fastest time of 23.34s.

Marama Sue ($4.00) and Intrepid Jet ($3.60) rounded out the minor places in a tight finish.

The two heat wins rounded out an impressive triple for the Braddons, with the Paul-Braddon trained Turbo Point powering home to win race one the Job Care Cleaning Stakes (313m).

Turbo Point headed race favourite Spy Powers ($2.20) by 2 3/4 lengths in a time of 18.62s with Best Of Luck ($3.50) third.

Graham and Vicki Pickering were all smiles when their brindle greyhound Uno Kelly claimed the biggest margin of the afternoon.

Uno Kelly ($2.50) shot away from box five to record a 6 3/4 length win over its nearest rival Buckle Bunny ($3.50) in a time of 23.44s in the Dawson Plaster Works Stakes (400m), with Emily Knows ($4.00) a further half length back third.

Other local trainers to bag winners included Denise Sparkes, Anthony Jeffrey and John Bowman.
