NSW greyhound punters finally get minimum bet laws

Greyhound racing

Greyhound () has today announced that from 1st July 2020 Minimum Bet Limits (MBL) will come into on NSW greyhound races.

NSW has been slow introduce laws necessary to protect punters and turnover on greyhound racing. Victorian greyhound punters have enjoyed MBL's since August 2018 ; and Queensland Minimum Bet Laws have been in place since June 2019.

The NSW MBL means that approved Online Service Providers (WSPs) who meet the requirements as outlined by GRNSW MBL conditions, will be required to accept a fixed odds bet at odds that are publicly displayed by the approval holder, for any NSW Greyhound race up to the maximum amounts specified.

These MBL amounts are:

  • $2,000 win and/or each way and $1,000 place component for Metropolitan NSW greyhound 1 final fields and MDC final field. Total aggregated risk $2,000.
  • $750 win and/or each way and $375 place component for Metropolitan NSW greyhound races which includes Saturday meetings and additional Wentworth Park meetings (A1 meetings) on other racedays. Total aggregated risk $750.
  • $500 win and/or each way and $250 place component for Non-Metropolitan NSW greyhound races. Total aggregated risk $500.

Obligations for WSPs to adhere to the GRNSW MBL are dependent on whether they have met the threshold criteria as stipulated in the GRNSW MBL Conditions. For a WSP to qualify for MBL it must have reached or exceeded the $10 million threshold based on NSW Greyhound turnover during a determined approval period.

Approved WSPs who meet the turnover threshold requirements will be required to adhere to the MBL. These requirements have been introduced after a consultation period where various stakeholders were engaged to provide feedback about the content and implementation of MBL.

All Australian Racing Greyhound's best greyhound bookmakers must comply with the NSW MBL. The only exception is who do not meet the turnover requirements.
