The Paul Abela-trained Panadero Warrior has upset more fancied rivals to qualify fastest for the $50,000 to-the-winner 2022 Group 2 Bendigo Cup final on Friday October 14 2022, leading all the way in 6.48, 23.47 (425m).

Starting in the second last heat of the night Panadero Warrior was sent out to the boxes an $8.40 chance to win his heat against Matt’s Hope ($2.70), Titan Blazer ($3.60) and My Neo ($3.90). Flying the boxes from box three, black son of Barcia Bale and Time No Money led the entire trip to clock his fastest Bendigo win and record his eighth win from 17 starts.

Panadero Warrior will have to overcome box six in the Group 2 $50,000 to-the-winner final.

Connections of Titan Blazer (23.60) and My Neo (23.84) who finished second and third behind Panadero Warrior, can feel justifiably unlucky having had their greyhounds run quicker than a number of other Bendigo Cup heat winners but will not qualify for the final.

The Jason Thpmpson-trained Typhoon Sammy qualified second fastest for Friday night’s final leading all the way from box one in a small field of six greyhounds. Despite having not qualified quickest, Typhoon Sammy carved out the quickest first split of the Bendigo Cup finalists running 6.37 on the way to his 23.52 win. That early speed will make him one of the favoured greyhounds heading in to Friday night where he sill start from box three.

Typhoon Sammy will be seeking to make amends for his third placed effort in the 2021 Bendigo Cup, and add the 2022 Bendigo Cup to his country cups trophy cabinet that includes the 2022 Traralgon Cup (395m) and 2022 Horsham Cup (485m).

Quinlan Bale wasn’t the best to begin his heat of the Bendigo Cup but used box three perfectly to drop down on the rail right on the heels of early leaders Plaintiff and Nikoli Bale. Having found the rail the Daniel Gibbons-trained greyhound drove under the pair heading in to the corner and held on to qualify equal third fastest in 23.67.

Jessica Sharp will be the only greyhound trainer to have two chances at the Bendigo Cup after qualifying both Aston Merit (23.69) and Orson Mick (23.95) for the final.

Aston Merit stalked early leader Action Girl before powering away to win his heat in 23.69. The Ray Borda-owned greyhound only ran 6.51 early from box five but will get all favours in the final having drawn box one. Aston Merit will be seeking to go one better than his Group 2 second placing behind Yozo Bale in the 2022 Geelong Gold Cup.

Orson Mick was more than a few lengths off the pace early in his heat but took advantage of box one and the two favourites Revolution and Silver Brute tangling each other up to drive through and secure his finals berth.

Anthony Azzopardi’s Salad Dodger won his way through to the final by posting back-to-back Bendigo 425m wins, running 6.52, 23.67. Notably the son of Whisky Riot’s had to overcome plenty of pressure inside and out from Tiggerlong Gas and I’m Talking early, so the win was full of merit.

The 2021 Bendigo Cup winner Paua Of Buddy will not get a chance to defend the crown after finishing last behind Salad Dodger.

In the opening heat, Garry Selkrig’s Shima Sheen led all the way and just held on to win beating One’s Obsession by just a head in 6.42, 23.87.

Coursing’s 2022 Waterloo Cup winner, He’s No Slouch; took out heat two for trainer Peter Craig. He’s No Slouch showed plenty of courage to burst through a pack of greyhounds mid race who were all causing each other interference, and which ultimately saw race favourite True Colinda fall. He’s No Slouch has drawn box eight in the final where he will be very well suited.

He’s No Slouch’s only other group final appearance was in the 2022 Group 1 Maturity Classic final where he finished down the track behind Wow She’s Fast.

The Group 2 Bendigo Cup final will be decided on Friday night October 14 2022, and notably not a single greyhound bitch will contest the race with only make greyhounds having qualified for the 425m feature race.
