Tamanian greyhound regulator distances itself from retired greyhounds
TasRacing has advised that the regulatory body has updated the local Tasmanian Greyhound Rules of Racing to specifically exclude retired greyhounds from its scope of control and supervision.
The rule change to the local greyhound racing rules was effective from July 1 2023, and makes changes to local greyhound racing rules L22.17 and L22.18.
The new rule changes mean any retired greyhound who become owned by any non-registered person or third party owner, will cease to be come a greyhound under local Tasmanian regulations.
Specifically the new rule reads:
- L22.17 In the event that a registered greyhound is notified to the Director as being retired as a pet, transferred to an adoption program (other than Tasracing’s Greyhound Adoption Program) or surrendered to another agency it shall cease to be registered as a greyhound for the purposes of racing or breeding under the provisions of the Rules.
For the sake of clarity, any greyhound within Tasracing’s Greyhound Adoption Program remains a greyhound under these Rules, and therefore subject to all associated oversight by the Director of Racing in accordance with all Tasracing Rules and Policies.
- L22.18 Notwithstanding the provisions of L22.17, in the case of a greyhound being retired to a third party, the Rules shall continue to apply during the time between the notification of retirement to the Director and the third party taking possession of the greyhound.
