Veteran Chaser Brother Tom Shows ‘Em How It’s Done

Veteran performer showed his younger rivals how it was done when he won the Ranvet stake at Casino last Friday. Originally drawn as a reserve, he gained a start from box two, and at box rise speared straight to the lead and held that advantage as they went down the back.

's Chariot loomed as a danger as they turned for home, but Brother Tom held too many “guns” holding on to win by a half length. Athol Bradley owns and trains this four year old galloper who is still racing in great heart. Athol concentrates mainly on give away greyhounds, and does a fine job with his small team.

Another “old timer” and Casino favourite, Beaver Fever retuned to his best form to take out the Casino RSM Club Free For All. As is normal in this class of race it was a great spectacle, with Beaver Fever leading hotly pursued by Roman's Know and . In a three way go to the line the Beaver prevailed by a half a head in 23.42 on a track that had received a heavy storm.

In another close finish Good Old Blue took out the Automotive stake by a neck from Sodoku Princess. A last start winner at Newcastle over the sprint trip in the best time of the day, he paid an amazing 12/1 on the TAB.

Stratheden conditioner Alan Lang stepped up Casino Cup finalist Big Cool Ronny to the 620 metres and was rewarded with the Blue Paws distance final. Ronny, who had won over the journey in June looked well placed in this 4th and 5th grade series, and as soon as he jumped straight to the front the race was all but over. He romped away from his rivals to win by 6 3/4 lengths in a handy 35.71. Alan is probably eyeing off a distance event at Albion Park with this son of Cool.

Jim Robinson took training honours on the day with a double. He won the 411 maiden with Kid Middy, who ran 23.26 after leading from the first turn. He is a son of Jim's great speedster of yesterday, Quiz Kid. Later, Remake won the 484 metre maiden after kicking clear in the back section and holding on to score by a half length. He ran 27.97.

The other maiden over 411 metres was won by Will's Big Red who is prepared by Mitch Northfield. He darted through a packing field to get up by 3/4 length in 23.73.

The trained Surin' Sal who hadn't been the best to begin at her lastest starts, belied that statistic to race away with the Valley Pet Supplies stake. She cleared the pack from box seven to kick away and win by 5 1/2 lengths in the best time of the day – 22.97.

Zip Zip Marina followed a good second the previous week to win the Westlawn Finance stake in 27.86 for , whilst Sookie Tawdry took the shortest way home along the fence to claim the Charcoal Inn stake for Bill and Sheila Smith in 27.88. It was a case of looking everywhere to seek the winner near home, but when the leaders raced wide, Sookie raced along the “paint” to win by a length.

Holidaying trainer may have helped pay expenses when Beta Pro took out the Casino Rural Traders stake in 27.98, and the well supported Up And Go continued 's good run when she won the second distance event in 36.10.

Casino will race again this Friday afternoon with another action packed twelve race card.
