Despite being drawn awkwardly in box six, the son of Magic Sprite and Silver Avenue was able to overcome a fair beginning, striding up three wide in the run through the first turn to get a nice sit just behind the leaders in the back straight. Once he balanced up, the black chaser slipped into another gear, circling the leader on the home turn and charging clear in the run to the line to score a dominant win in 29.97.
Early leader Zabdon Ferrari was far from disgraced when finishing second for Tony Brett, two and three quarter lengths off the winner, with fellow Victorian Dundee Osprey flashing home late to grab third, just clinching a spot in the decider.
While Brett’s charge was run down in the third heat, he had plenty to smile about in the race prior with Thirty Talks scoring an impressive win. While a seed of doubt had been planted as to whether he would handle the inside draw, the brindle dog was able to barge his way along the fence, assuming the lead in the early stages.
Despite mid race pressure from NSW visitor Tilly’s Boy, Thirty Talks battled on well, scoring by a length at the finish over Gelantipy Gold and Magical Yessam, the winner clocking 29.97.
The remaining heat was another one act affair, with the consistent Fabulous Bill scoring for Bill and Cyndie Elson. The black dog was beaten for speed in the run to the first turn by Big Harry, but used box two well, sticking to the fence and railing down the back to take control and shoot clear.
Turning for home, Fabulous Bill was well clear, registering a 30.17 victory over France Soir and Tripum, the win giving him career triumph 10 at start 28.
The Group 2 Queensland Derby final will be run at Albion Park next Thursday and is worth $47,250 to the winner.
