Wag Tail Flies Home To Claim 2014 Queensland National Distance Final

Wag Tail (5) will represent Queensland in the 2014 AGRA National Distance Final after she took out the Queensland final at on Thursday night.

The Christina Harman trained daughter of and Bacardi Cruiser (Just The Best – Lou’s Cruise) timed her run to perfection to claim Rain Stream (8) right on the line and score by a half-head in 41.99.

After being sent out a $2.10 favourite, the 27kg black bitch found herself in fifth place early as the fastest heat winner Hougenie (7) tore around the outside to find the early lead. Mullaway (6) sat in second place with Rain Stream (8) working to a nice position in third place.

As the field headed into the back straight, Hougenie was giving them something to catch and looked as though the race was hers to lose, Rain Steam was beginning to make ground in third and looked the main danger while Wag Tail remained in fourth.

Off the back, Rain Stream had worked to second and set out after Hougenie who still had a four length break while Wag Tail was still in third and yet to appear as though she was posing any threat.

Into the home straight, Hougenie started to show signs of fatigue and was claimed by Rain Stream on the outside. Just as it looked as though Rain Stream would win the race, Wag Tail sprouted wings along the fence and claimed her in the shadows of the post.

Rain Stream finished a close second and reaffirmed that she looks to have a future as a stayer in the Sunshine State. Hougenie clung on for a tiring third two lengths away with Mullaway in fourth.

The win was Wag Tail’s 19th from 48 starts and her ninth from 15 over the staying trip at Albion Park. It takes her earnings to just shy of $70,000, an amount that could grow substantially if she takes out the big one at on August 23rd.
