Where’s Pedro Takes Top Honours For 2011 Breeding Statistics
With another year in the greyhound racing world done and dusted, there has been a mix of the experienced and youthful sires amongst those who have produced Group winners in 2011. In 2010, Surf Lorian and Bombastic Shiraz shared top spot for the most group winners produced however Where’s Pedro beat them both to the line this year with 12 group winners. Second place went to Bombastic Shiraz with 10 and in third spot was Collision with 10.
Fancy Will, trained by leading Sydney trainer Anthony Azzopardi was Pedro’s only Group One winner for 2011 when he took out the Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park back in October. However it is no surprise that his most successful Group winning greyhound was Carolyn Jones’ all conquering El Grand Senor. In 2011 he took out the Group Two Shepparton Cup, Traralgon Cup and the Warragul Cup racking up plenty of points for his father.
2010 leading sire Bombastic Shiraz had to settle for second best this year but only missed out on top spot by two winners. However, he does claim honours for having sired the most Group One winners for 2011 with 5. Bobby Boucheau trained by Angela Jackson, daughter of leading Victorian trainer Kel Greenough was his most successful progeny contributing three Group One victories which included; Sandown Cup, Australian Super Stayers and the Albion Park Gold Cup. Spring Gun trained by Christine Oldfield dominated the Vic Peters Final at Wentworth Park whilst Metz Magic who started as second reserve took out the National Sprint Championship at Albion Park for Queensland legendary trainer Ron Ball.
The always dominant Collision improved on his 2010 statistics with 10 Group winners for 2011 which included 4 Group One wins, the second highest behind Bombastic Shiraz. High Earners Perth Cup victory early in 2011 started off a great year in which High Earner also took out the Temlee, Bogie King claimed National Derby honours for rookie trainer Ryan Ayre and the Wheeler domination provided his biggest victory of 2011 with Dyna Tron saluting in the Melbourne Cup in November.
Despite the big names that are continuously atop the breeding rankings table, 2011 produced some up and comers which will definitely be worth watching in 2012 and to keep in mind if your interests include the breeding game.
The biggest improver in 2011 was Primo Uno whose offspring claimed seven Group victories. Three of his pups shared top honours for the best performers including; Enry Walt (Group Two Horsham Cup and Group Two Bendigo Cup) and Shimaguni (Group Three Distance Title and Chairman’s Cup). Also included in this illustrious group were He Knows Uno and Marked Down who will also guarantee Primo Uno’s presence again in 2012.
Malfoy made a burst onto the breeding scene this year thanks to his highly talented litter out of Or Catra, breed and owned by Martin and Fiona Hallinan. Zipping Lad trained by leading mentor Jason Mackay has been the most successful in 2011 with Group victories including; Newcastle Cup, Summer Cup and the NSW Distance Championship. Anthony Azzopardi’s Zipping Malfoy also added a Group One title winning the Bold Trease Carnival Cup.
2012 is a prosperous year for the breeding world with many promising sires offspring set to make their debuts. Magic Sprite the winner of 10 races from just 11 starts including the Group Three Mega Maiden at The Gardens in 29.58 progeny should hit the track with flying colours along with 2010 Group One Paws of Thunder Winner Lochinvar Marlow‘s should be hitting the racetrack towards the back end of 2012. 2010 National Sprint Championship winner Smooth Fancy will also have keen breeders interested in his offspring who should start to make the track by 2012 as well as 2010 multiple Group One winner Dyna Lachlan who is becoming one of the most popular at stud.
