Cannington greyhound track history
CANNINGTON is the premier greyhound track in Western Australia and is home to metropolitan class greyhound racing every Saturday night.
Cannington also races every Monday and Wednesday – with these two additional meetings carrying provincial status. For each meeting there are between 10 to 12 races on the program, with up to eight greyhounds competing in each race.
The ‘new’ Cannington track opened on March 23, 2016 and cost $16 million to build – entirely funded by Racing and Wagering Western Australia.
The track has a sand racing surface and is 440m in circumference. Initially, there were teething problems with the new venue, with the sand used on the track combined with the camber resulting in a leader’s bias.
Prior to 2016, racing in the area was conducted on the ‘old’ Cannington track adjacent to the new site, with the decision to relocate being forced due to high rental repayments at the previous track.
The old Cannington track operated for more than four decades – with the main features such as the Group 1 Perth Cup and the Group 1 Galaxy moving to the new track when racing was relocated.
The old Cannington track first opened on December 12, 1974, with more than 15,000 people attending the first race meeting. The eight race card was a huge success, generating more than $60,000 in TAB turnover, whilst on-course betting swelled to almost $120,000.
Racing at the new Cannington venue is controlled by the WA Greyhound Racing Association. WAGRA were established in 1981 under the WA Greyhound Racing Association Act. WAGRA also oversees the running of the two other greyhound racing venues in the state – Mandurah and Northam.
The main race at Cannington each year is the Group 1 Perth Cup which is held over the 520m sprint and is worth $150,000 to the winner.
The Perth Cup has been won by some of the finest canines the sport has seen including Tenthill Doll (1996), Rapid Journey (1998), Betty’s Angel (2007), High Earner (2010, 2011) and My Bro Fabio (2015).
