In pursuit of victory in a Group 1, trainer from Nowra is getting his greyhound, August Bob, ready for the semi-finals of the prestigious Golden Easter Egg (520m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday, April 13.

Fitch, who switched to full-time training last year, has seen success with his small team of racing dogs, achieving numerous wins with an impressive success rate.

Last year in October, Fitch came close to winning the richest prize in greyhound racing when Cumbria Kid put up a strong challenge against Queensland's star Jay Is Jay in an exciting Million Dollar Chase final.

Despite some impressive victories for Fitch, a major group race win has remained out of reach for him so far.

Something he hopes to change over the next two Saturdays at Wentworth Park.

“I've been near the top in races before, so if I manage to break through this time around, winning the Easter Egg would be a fantastic start,” shared Fitch.

If August Bob can repeat his performance from the heats, Fitch believes he stands a chance.

August Bob has won 14 out of his 27 races and showed promising form in his Golden Easter Egg heat by clocking an impressive time of 29.35 seconds.

Mackenna, a leading contender, outdid herself this time by clinching the title of the fastest female winner at Wentworth Park with an impressive 29.20 victory, which has placed her as the favourite to win the $350,000 prize.

August Bob has been placed as the second-favourite at $3.80, with the top greyhound betting sites in his semi-final trailing behind the favoured Nangar Larry ($2.60), who secured the advantageous box one position.

Despite this, Fitch remains unperturbed by the odds.

Fitch has noticed that sometimes the market values reputation over performance. Which works in his favour.

A win for August Bob in the $350,000 Golden Easter Egg series would carry a massive amount of significance for Steve Fitch.

This comes from the Tifi family lineage, tracing back to the figure Alice Dooley, who left an indelible mark on greyhound racing history.

The prestigious lineage led to the victory of the 2005 Golden Easter Egg, by the Paua To Burn, earning a deserved spot in the esteemed Australian Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame.
