Spring Patriot's adaptability and toughness could see him overcome the dreaded eight box in the second Golden Easter Egg semi-final at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The three-year-old produced a superb heat run in the 520m event, crossing the line in 29.70 seconds last weekend, just half a length behind for .

It was his best time over that distance and particularly admirable given it was his first start since February 18.

He is an $8 winning chance according to greyhound betting sites behind ($2.20 from box one) this weekend, and trainer Scott Board was pleased with the effort in his last assignment.

“I was happy. He was coming back from five weeks off,” he told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“I trialled him at for the over 600m, and he trialled 34.70.

“He had never had a 600, and it was only two-tenths slower than the winner.

“With that and a couple of runs he would've been right in the finish, but he pulled up lame.

“He had a very limited preparation going into Saturday night. It was a strong run given the work he did.”

Spring Patriot – with nine wins from 28 starts – is not short on talent.

He has also overcome his fair share of injury setbacks.

“He's a very fast dog, but he's torn his flexor tendon five times,” Board said.

“He's a tough dog and good chaser. He's adaptable.

“If you look through the times, I think he was the fifth or sixth-faster qualifier (for the Golden Easter Egg semi-finals) off a limited preparation.”

Spring Patriot will not have a good preparation of races behind him going into his weekend assignment.

But he has the ability and tenacity to quality for the Golden Easter Egg final from the outer lane.

“He won't be fully race fit, but I've always thought with a strong preparation – because he always re-injures his tendon – that he'd be around the 29.50s,” Board said.

“He's just never had the (ideal) preparation.”
