El Galo Chases The Half Million Dollar Mark Tonight

Glamour sprinter El Galo is tonight attempting to become only the second greyhound in the sport's history to crack half a million dollars in stakes.

El Galo ($492,585) is chasing back-to-back Group 2 Warrnambool Cups, and by finishing first ($26,000) or second ($7425) will join NSW great ($530,995) in the exclusive ‘$500,000 club'.

Rapid Journey has held the all-time prize money mark since 1998.

Trained by , of Pearcedale, El Galo is Australia's No. 1 speedster, and greyhound racing's biggest drawcard. He has developed a nationwide cult following.

El Galo was crowned the 2008 Australian Greyhound of the Year and 2008 Victorian Greyhound of the Year.

He has won seven Group races, including three at Group 1 level – 2009 Adelaide Cup, 2009 Temlee and 2008 .

Of course that total would have been eight Group wins and four Group 1's but for his positive swab in the 2008 Group 1 Topgun. That $100,000 win would also have seen him clearly Australia's highest prizemoney winning greyhound but was forfeited when disqualified.

His stud value is estimated at $4-5 million.
