Tony Brett has woven his magic with Flash Reality (5), taking out the Group Two Queensland Derby in race record time at Albion Park on Thursday night. He led from go to whoa holding out race favourite and Perth Cup winner Keybow (2) in the dying stages to win his first career group race.
Initial race assessments were thrown out the window with the late scratching of Zipping Brock (1), who was expected to be in the firing line at the business end of the race. Keybow (2) was in doubt during the week after sustaining an injury in the catching pen but he gave his all in a race that was controlled beautifully by Flash Reality.
At box rise, the yellow rug was clearly prominent as Flash Reality scorched to the first mark in 5.46. He had two lengths on the field going around the first turn with Keybow slotted in just behind him. Strong finisher Peter’s Pick moved up into third at this stage and also loomed as a danger. These positions didn’t change down the back.
As Flash Reality turned for home, Keybow was slowly whittling down the lead and it was a matter of looking for the finish line to see if Flash Reality could stave off the challenge. He ended up holding Keybow out by three quarters of a length on the line. Peter’s Pick was two and a half lengths away in third.
The win was the third career victory from just eight starts for the imposing 34kg dog and takes his career stakes earning beyond $44,000.
