Hector Fawley wins Group 1 Hume Cup for Cockerell family

Hector Fawley pulled off a stunning Group 1 victory by defeating the favoured Tasmanian visitor Raiders Guide, in the prestigious 2023 Group 1 Hume Cup held at on Saturday night.

This race had all the makings of a between the two Hume Cup heat winners, with Raiders Guide being backed to start the +180 race favourite at greyhound betting sites.

Hector Fawley was the close second favourite for the race, sent to the boxes as a +190 chance in the race.

Starting from box one, Raiders Guide was able to comfortably reach the lead early, but danger loomed over his chances of leading all the way when Hector Fawley was able to lob in a close second in the run.

Hector Fawley showcased his undeniable strength and determination by surging to the lead in the back straight when Raiders Guide drifted off the rails.

Once in front, he maintained his dominance, crossing the finish line with a 1.99-length advantage over Raiders Guide in a time of 34.26.

Hector Fawley's dominant display was a career highlight for husband and wife trainers Lisa and Ian Cockerell, who train from Lara with largely homebred greyhounds with their 12-year-old twins, Morgan and Taylor.

Keeping it a very family affair, Lisa's mother Marlene, also joins in the ownership of Hector Fawley.

Hector Fawley is sired by , out of the Cockerell's own dam , a winner of just two races.

The talented middle distance performer has now won 17 of his 41 races, running a further nine placings.

Hector Fawley's Hume Cup win was his first Group 1 success, after winning the 2023 Showdown over 595m in May.

He has now amassed an impressive prizemoney total of over $238,295 for the Cockerell family.

“I was really worried when he didn't start well, and I still can't believe how he managed to get into second place,” Lisa Cockerell said post-race.

“I'm just so proud of him.

“He gives his all every start and he had to the hard way tonight.

“This is all a bit surreal.

“It's a real family affair for us as we are all right into it.

“You watch so many people with their superstar dogs, and to think that we have one is just amazing.”
