It’s young talent time as Laurie Healion Maiden series begins

A PLETHORA of up-and-coming starts will be on show at Newcastle's premier track, , this Saturday, with the commencement of the 3 Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden heats over 515 metres.

This series has been won by some outstanding greyhounds in the past six years, with several greyhounds going onto victory in Group 1 finals. Lochinvar Marlow won the final back in 2009 and in 2010 saluted in the Group 1 Paws of Thunder. was successful in the 2009 final and retired in the middle of 2010 with 10 wins from 11 career starts, he's since gone onto to become one o the most popular and proven sires in Australia at present.

Six heats will be conducted on Saturday afternoon, followed by semi-finals next , with the decider to be run and won on 31st July, with $22,500 being presented to the winner.

Some of the standout greyhounds to follow are:

Good Odds Angel – $3.50 with Bet365 – Spring Gun x Punk Angel – Heat One, Box Two – Trained by Frank Hurst. This red brindle bitch is a half-sister to outstanding chaser Evil Punk and from all-reports has been trialling well at The Gardens in preparation for this event. Recorded a time of 31.07 in a performance trial at Richmond over 535m last month and will be making her race track debut.

– $10 with – Mildean Panther x Go Jessie's Girl – Heat One, Box Three – Trained by Nancy Mcintosh. This 31kg dog looked solid in his 30.01 performance trial at The Gardens two weeks ago.

Chevy Prince – $1.50 with Bet365 – x Chevy Princess – Heat One, Box Six – Trained by Jason Mackay. Everyone is anticipating this greyhound's first race start, particularly after sizzling around Maitland in a performance trial last week, clocking 24.98.

Heir Of King – $2.50 with Bet365 – Bogie King x Bogie Angel – Heat Two, Box Four – Trained by Beau Hedley. Despite finishing seventh on debut at this track two weeks ago, this talented greyhound finished second and recorded 29.82 at Gosford back in May, followed by a solid 25.65 performance trial at Maitland last month.

Blipple – $3.50 with Bet365 – Fabregas x Chevy Princess – Heat Two, Box Eight – Trained by Bradley Canty. Was very raw in her first start at Albion Park back in April, however is a litter sister to Chevy Prince and is in a red-hot kennel at present.

Top Caliber – $4.00 with Bet365 – Spring Gun x El Sutro – Heat Three, Box One – Trained by Ron Bell. This greyhound is surely to be well schooled at The Gardens and carved out a handy time of 29.97 in a performance trial three weeks ago. Perfectly drawn on the inside to bounce out in front, after clocking 5.08 to the first mark.

Mulwee Dream – $1.85 with Bet365 – Spring Gun x Teenage Dream – Heat Five, Box Seven – Trained by Dean Swain. Flew around Gosford last month in her first performance trial over 515m, clocking 29.86. Showed stamina, running home in 12.78 and, provided she gets a clean getaway, will carve out a nice time in this heat.

Our Gypsy – $6.00 with Bet365 – Collision x Diamondo – Heat Five, Box Eight – Trained by Gregory Adamthwaite. Was pipped on the line in her only performance trial at The Gardens last week in 30.05. Recorded a solid 5.04 to the first mark and can run a cheeky race on debut.

Movie Fever – $2.80 with Bet365 – Buck Fever x Midnight Movie – Heat Six, Box Two – Trained by David Pringle. Recorded a handy performance trial at Bathurst two weeks ago in 26.07 over 450m. The biggest test for this beautifully bred greyhound will a combination of travelling and how he handles the two-turn circuit.

Pass Lee – $2.50 with Bet365 x Surpassing – Heat Six, Box Six – Trained by Craig Chappelow. Won her only performance trial at Dapto a month ago by fifteen lengths in 30.20 and will be primed for this event. Showed good early pace, which is a huge asset when racing at The Gardens.

Zipping Sasha – $3.50 with Bet365 – Magic Sprite x Pink Bandanna – Heat Six, Box Seven – Trained by Jason Mackay. Found the line well in her only performance trial last week at The Gardens, clocking a respectable time of 30.05. Expect plenty of improvement this week in her first racetrack appearance.

The first heat will jump at 5.53pm EST.
