Tim Caines again placed under interim suspension
NSW greyhound trainer Tim Caines has again been placed under interim suspension by the NSW Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC). This time Pamela Caine has also been placed under interim suspension after permanently banned substances were found during property searches.
Mr Caines was placed under interim suspension last year pending finalisation of an inquiry relating to a positive swab for recombinant human erythropoietin, otherwise known as EPO, stemming from the Million Dollar Chase series. EPO is a permanently banned substance.
Nangar Jack ran second to Good Odds Harada in a Million Dollar Chase heat before winning the $46,000 Million Dollar Chase consolation final at the lucrative starting price of $8.
In mid January, GWIC lifted the interim suspension on Caine when the second confirmatory analysis of the allegedly positive sample did not confirm the presence of EPO.
After lifting the suspension GWIC said they were still conducting an investigation into other matters that came to the Commission's attention during an inspection at Mr Caines' kennels on 5 December 2019.
Those inspections appear to have unearthed four substances. Laboratory analysis on one of the substances is alleged to have returned a positive to a permanently banned substance. GWIC suspect that the other three substances are also permanently banned.
GWIC have again imposed an immediate interim suspension on Caines, but this time they have also placed the same interim suspension on Pamela Caines. Both are charged with the same offence.
GWIC have confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
Melinda Finn was the first Australian greyhound trainer to be found guilty of presenting a greyhound to race that tested positive to EPO, and was handed a 12-year disqualification before having that sentence reduced to just two-and-a-half years on appeal.
