QUEENSLAND raider Slick (Dyna Lachlan x Pearl Za Zinger Apr '15) was nothing short of breathtaking when claiming his heat of the Group 1 Paws of Thunder (520m) at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and now thanks to online bookmaker TopBetta you can claim a massive $4.60 for him to claim the $75,000-to-the-winner final.
Trained by John McCarthy, Slick showed tremendous speed in his qualifier, burning to the front with a nippy 5.46 first section before charging to the line to win by six and one quarter lengths in 29.67 – easily the fastest time of the night.
He now heads into the final having won three straight, including a fast 29.71 run at Albion Park, and looks perfectly positioned in box two – a draw from which he has won seven of his 10 starts with two minor placings.
The last time the black powerhouse was drawn in box two he won his heat of the Group 1 Brisbane Cup before following up that performance with a narrow second behind Fast Times in the decider on December 7.
It's impossible to fault his recent form, having run a place in eight of his past nine starts – his only unplaced effort being a fourth in the Group 3 Ipswich Cup behind Outside Pass.
McCarthy says he is thrilled with his greyhound heading into the final and that he is hoping for a bold show.
“It was a really good run in his heat – he was left alone early and he showed them what he could do,” McCarthy told Australian Racing Greyhound.
“He has got a big motor and he is racing in a purple patch of form. He ran second in the Brisbane Cup and he has run some very fast times at Albion Park – so hopefully everything comes together for him this weekend.”
McCarthy said he is pleased with the box draw and believes it brings his consistent chaser right into the race.
“It's the draw which he has won most of his racing from – so he is well drawn and if he can begin like he did in his heat he will be right in it.”
Already the winner of 19 from 47 with 16 minor placings, a win on Saturday night will take Slick's earnings just below the $200,000 mark.
He will face a tough field against group 1 winners Raw Ability (Barcia Bale x Bugatti Flyer Mar '15) and Up Hill Jill (Premier Fantasy x Where's Demonica Feb '15), but McCarthy is optimistic he can upstage his Victorian rivals.
“If he is near the front early he is going to be in with a big chance,” McCarthy explained.
“He is up against some bloody good dogs, but I think he is in with a really good show.”
