The Dynamic Duo Strike At Melton

On Sunday we headed to Melton for the running of the Werribee Cup and J.N.Smith Memorial meeting. This meeting once again proved to be another successful notch in our belt having received 111 nominations. T

he Werribee Club having lost their location at the Werribee Racecourse, have for the past few years held their meeting at the Melton Greyhound Racing Club would like to sincerely thank all of the team at Melton for their hard work in making sure this meeting was another great day of coursing. Despite the rain throughout the week the grounds and the track were fantastic.

Jerry and Maureen Maye’s dynamic duo of Connemara Sky and Connemara Flame took the honours in the Werribee Cup and the J.N. Smith Memorial respectively once again showing that they were the stars of the day taking out the two main events. Connemara Sky came up against the experienced Queen Selene in the final and with nothing much between the two Sky came home the better today.

In the J.N.Smith Memorial Flame was up against Jacas Mate who made the journey down from Numurkah with his trainer Jess Fothergill. Again both greyhounds coursed brilliantly throughout the day but Flame put her afterburners on and was first past the post!

Next up was the Maiden Dogs, in Maiden Dog No.1 Boppin’ for G of , a first timer to the coursing showed he knew what to do pretty quickly and made his way to the final where he came up against Claretown Milo trained by K Miller who was also a first timer to this coursing caper. Today it was Boppin’ Dazzler who got the money.

The Maiden Dog No.2 was won by Let Em’ Drop for the Breen camp of Snake Valley, gallant in defeat was Bernie Ender’s Hard Day’s Night.

The Bitch Maiden’s were next and Blonde Caviar for Peter Franklin got the chocolates over Remo Sky, some of you older coursing folk may remember Peter from the old days at Camperdown where he was the slipper! Bitch Maiden No. 2 was won by Fire For Shore from the Sturgess camp, who was too good today for her kennel mate Claretown Peggy.

Last but by no means least was our puppy events and let me say these kids just keep getting better and better! I am sure our Classics of the in 2 weeks time and then the Derby and Oaks a little latter in the season are going to be full of surprises if the pups we have seen so far are anything to go by.

Alasdair Armstrong’s two litter brother’s Passing Comment and Keep It Shut were too good today winning the Derby Trial 1and 2 respectively, both pups seem to have what it takes so I can’t wait to see what happens when we get to Lang Lang in a fortnight for the Sylvester Doyle ! In saying that both Runner Up’s Gary Groundwork and Don the Falcon coursed very well throughout the day will the drag make a difference?? We’ll have to wait and see about that.

The bitches showed they had plenty of fuel in their little tanks with Uno Sprite having success yet again at Melton winning the Oaks Trial over Julie Belsham’s Bessie Wallis. Hare Addict for was again successful winning her Mixed Puppy event showing off her ‘Girl Power’ by beating Born to Molly in the final.

As mentioned earlier the NCA of wish to express their thanks to all of the trainers who are catching on to coursing in 2013 as we celebrate 140 years. We head down to Lang Lang on the 30th June for the first day of the and the where we should have another great days coursing. Hope to see you there!
