Moraine Suzie stakes quickest time in 2023 Group 1 Bold Trease heats

A victorious Moraine Suzie heads back to the kennels after qualifying fastest for the 2023 Group 1 final.

Moraine Suzie franked the recent Stayers form and made a strong comeback to , qualifying fastest for the 2023 Group 1 Bold Trease final at Park on Saturday night.

The reigning Victorian Stayer of the Year made a determined run from back in the field to overhaul 2023 Group 1 Topgun Stayers winner Ritza Piper, who was attempting to lead all the way, late in the home straight.

Moraine Suzie was the 2022 Group 1 winner at The Meadows and will be joined in the Bold Trease final by the 2023 winner, Ritza Piper, whom she finished runner-up to in 2023.

Under the guidance of Lara trainer Brendan Pursell, Moraine Suzie started the +180 race favourite with greyhound bookmakers, and finished with such a surge that she won by 1.34 lengths in a time of 41.69 seconds.

New South Wales-owned and Queensland-trained stayer was the next fastest Bold Trease heat winner, leading all the way in 41.70 to beat the fast-finishing Zoha Bale.

The daughter of Hooked On Scotch and Lady Avenger was making her group racing debut in the Group 1 heats, and punters let her go to the boxes as the rank outsider in the race, paying +3880 at greyhound betting sites.

Mrs Avenger will be joined in the final by the ever-popular runner-up, Untapped, who is defying retirement by racing in almost career-best form.

Trained at Warrnambool by Dusty Drew, Untapped will now be racing in her third Bold Trease final and her fifth Group 1 715m race final at Sandown.

It is fitting that the daughter of Aston Dee Bee and Mepunga Fame will be looking to improve her third in the 2021 Bold Trease final and add the race title named after the ‘Warrnambool Warrior' to her 2022 Group 1 Sandown Cup win.

If Bold Trease is quite rightly reknowned as the ‘Warrnambool Warrior', then Untapped could justify taking the moniker of the ‘Warrnambool Wonder' should she be able to secure a second Sandown 715m Group 1 final as a rising four-and-a-half-year-old.
