THERE’S an old adage that states ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, and we’re suspecting the Sandown stewards would have had to check the track for scorch marks following Fire And Smoke’s win in race 9.
Favourite backers would have felt great about themselves after $1.80 favourite at online bookmaker Sportsbet Go Seek Fernando hugged the rails from the inside box to shoot away and lead at the first turn from a bunching field.
Among the tail-enders was the in form second favourite Fire And Smoke, who was looking to continue an impressive December which saw the Jerry Britton-trained chaser finish second at the start of the month before claiming victory at Sandown on December 13.
As the race progressed it seemed like it was a formality that Go Seek Fernando would win, with $17.50 outsider Wise Piquet running into second but never truly looking a winning threat.
15 lengths off the the leader, Fire And Smoke began to pick up the pace after looking out of the race following an early check. He balanced up nicely along the back and began circling the field prior to the final turn, but it seemed he would run out of time in his pursuit of the leader.
Upon straightening Go Seek Fernando had beaten off the challenge of Wild Pique, but the two rug would not be denied. Storming home with a blistering turn of foot, Fire And Smoke hit the lead as the post emerged to complete a spectacular performance.
Fire And Smoke returned $5 at online bookmaker BetEasy.
